〈金沢〉
卯の花山・くりからが谷をこえて、金沢は七月中の五日也。茲（ここ）に大坂 よりかよふ商人何処と云者有。それが旅宿をともにす。一笑と言うものは、 此道にすける名のほのぼの間えて、世に知人も侍しに、去年の冬、草世したりとて、其兄追善を催すに、

塚も動け我泣声は秋の風

ある草庵にいざなはれて

秋涼し手毎にむけや瓜茄子

途中吟

あかあかと日は難面もあきの風

After crossing Verbena Mountain and the valley of Kurikara, we reached Kanazawa on the fifteenth of the seventh month. We shared lodgings with a merchant named Kasho from Ozaka
l had heard vague reports of one lssho, a man devoted to our art, who had established something of a reputation; but he had died young in the winter of the previous year. On the occasion of a memorial service offered by his older brother, I wrote:

tsuka mo ugoke Shake your tomb, reply!
wa ga naku koe My voice that weeps for you
aki no kaze ls the autumn wind.

On being invited to a thatched hut:

aki suzushi The cool of autumn ――
tegoto ni rnuke ya Every hand start peeling
uri nasubi Melons and eggplants!

On the road:

aka aka to Redly, redly
hi wa tsurenaku mo The sun shines heartlessly, but
aki no kaze The wind is autumnal.

ドナルド・キーン、宮田　雅之さんの力を借りて読破。日本語を読んで、意味をおぼろげに理解し、英語をよんで、「あぁーそーぅだったのか」、も一度、日本語を読んで、確認。おかしいですね、日本の最高の古典の一つなのに、私には英語の方が良くわかる。言語（古文？）問題の他、古い日本に対する知識・認識がプアーな私は恥じ入るしかない。

おくのほそ道で一番、気に入っている句が、
あかあかと日は難面もあきの風

自然の移り変わりとこの世の中の流れが、実に巧みに表現されているようで、す～と心の中に落ち着く気分。
